What is Red Diaper Syndrome?

Imagine this: your baby spits up on a bib, and you notice later it turns pink or reddish in color. Or you pull out a used nursing pad or diaper to find it’s a similar rosy hue. It’s rare, but it happens and before you start freaking out thinking this may be blood, it could be Red Diaper Syndrome.

Caused by a bacteria called Serratia Marcescens, this can affect mom and baby both. Aside from the prettily colored after affects from bodily fluids, babies with Red Diaper Sydrome are generally fussy and often don’t show other symptoms right away. Regardless, if you think you might have this, you’ll need to see your doctor for treatment as an infection of this type of bacteria could lead to much more serious problems then just colorful garments.
