Is Glass Really Better?

If you’re thinking that you’re suddenly seeing far more glass containers and food storage options, you’re not imagining things. While glass options were the only choice back in the 50’s, the wide spread usage of less expensive plastics meant that glass containers fell out of favor for a few decades. Plastic Tupperware began taking over cabinet space across the country.

In recent years, however, a groundswell of concerns arose regarding the seepage of chemicals from plastic pieces into food. Rightfully raising eyebrows, it prompted many to question if going back to glass was the better way to go. Given the resurgence of everything from glass bottles to ramekins, it’s clear that many think that this medium is superior, but why exactly is that?

  1. Glass is Safer – While improvements in plastics composition and heightened awareness to the dangers of BPA (P.S. all Beaba products are BPA free!) have led to better plastics, glass is generally a safer bet for anything requiring heat. Why is that? Glass is an inert, non-porous material, which means it can be subjected to temperature changes without any danger, whereas chemicals from plastics (not just BPA) can seep into food.
  2. Multifunctional – Since glass performs safely at different temperatures, you can bake a breakfast casserole and then store it in your fridge without changing containers. From freezer to oven, glass can do it all.
  3. Cleanliness – Have you ever tried to store spaghetti sauce in Tupperware? If so, you know that it will be tinged that oh-so-obvious shade of sauce forever, and it will likely have a lingering smell to it as well. With glass storage options, transparency is always maintained even when faced with carrots, beets, and other brightly hued foods. It will also never scratch or dent.
  4. Eco-Friendly – Because of its versatility and durability, people keep glass containers longer. Plastic counterparts end up in landfills, whereas glass options have a lifetime of value which means a smaller environmental footprint.

While glass is preferred for heating foods and storing things like your curry leftovers, don’t dismiss plastic all together. Lightweight and inexpensive, BPA-free plastic products offer an easily transportable solution that safely work for many needs. Instead of thinking about it as either or, focus on buying the pieces which make the most sense for the intended usage.
