Dog Days of Summer: LA Edition

School’s out for summer! While your littles may wait all year for this, we know just how challenging it can be sometimes to keep them busy for two. straight.months.  Whether you’re heading to LA for a family vacay, or if you’re an LA native desperate for new ideas to keep the kids occupied, we’ve got a guide to the most entertaining events happening this summer. From flying unicorn pigs to fossil digs, there’s something on this list for everyone!

San Diego Zoo Safari ParkSleep with the lions: Have you ever dreamed of kissing a lion good night? Nope? Well, neither have we…but we’re still convinced we need to pack our bags and head to the San Diego Zoo Safari Park (with or without the littles). Spy on wildlife after the sunsets, hang out by the campfire, or head on a guided adventure – this slumber party is full of activities for the whole family.

Head to Candytopia: If your little one has a sugar tooth the size of Texas, your family needs to head to Candytopia. Imagine flying unicorn pigs and marshmellow tsunamis…we’re not even sure what that means, but we’re intrigued. Our mouths are already watering!

Make a splash in SoCal’s tide pools: Some summer days are just meant to be spent in the water! If your little one’s curiosity is piqued by nature, check out this list of tidal pools. Have fun in the sun and see all sorts of sea creatures, from starfish to sea cucumbers and crabs!

…or crash at a splash pad: If you can’t make it to the shore, there are plenty of splash pads for your family to chill out at. From fountains to a paddling paradise, this list has it all. The best part? All of these options are either free or very inexpensive.

Jam out to some jazz:  Get ready to show off your family’s best dance moves! Put on your dancing shoes and take your family to one of LACMA’s summer concerts on the lawn which happen every Friday throughout the summer. If jazz isn’t quite your family’s style, check this schedule of Latin music concerts.

Live out Jurassic Park: If your family is into science, head over to the La Brea Tar Pits & Museum to watch fossils be uncovered and learn about the Ice Age. Visit after 5pm on Summer Fridays for a behind-the-scenes peek into what the scientists are doing (Bonus- general admission after hours is free!).

Watch a movie under the stars: We’re big fans of rooftop-anything, and LA’s Rooftop Cinema Club is no exception. Get cozy with your family (lawn chairs and blankets are provided), then sit back, relax and enjoy the show! There are even snacks and drinks for the littles and for adults.

Be a flower child at Griffith Park: Frolick in a field of Pinwheel poppies or lay down in a bath full of lavender – the BLOOM art show is coming to LA at the end of June. Think flower crowns, edible flowers, art projects and even music. This is one very ‘grammable event you won’t want to miss!
