Calling all dads! This one’s for YOU! This week we’re talking all about Couvade Syndrome. Also known as Sympathetic Pregnancy, Couvade Syndrome is a condition where men experience the same pregnancy-related symptoms as their pregnant partner. Though not recognized as a mental illness or disease, it’s more common than you would think! Reported symptoms occur during the first and third trimesters of pregnancy. Physical symptoms include: nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, cramps, and appetite changes. Psychological symptoms to follow include: disrupted sleeping patterns, anxiety, depression, restlessness, and reduced libido.

While more research is being done to solidify if it actually exists, it’s not totally bonkers to think that becoming a parent can cause a flux of emotions and stress. According to doctors, stress releases chemicals in the body that can manifest these symptoms. Couples who have had struggles with infertility or miscarriage in the past are more susceptible as well. If just reading this is bringing on anxiety, fear not! The good news is Couvade Syndrome is temporary (well, almost always!) and not serious, as the symptoms generally disappear after the baby is born. On the bright side, you can freely stress-eat ice cream with your partner ALL you want. After all, preparing for a baby is tough work!
